It is with so much sadness that I announce that Ian Hawks, Member 622 (London Branch) Crossed the Bar on the 11 June 2013 aged 90.
Ian’s daughter Susan has informed me that it will be a private family funeral however donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the RNLI via S Stibbards and Sons, 4 Commonhall Lane, Hadleigh, Benfleet, Essex SS7 2RN. Telephone (01702) 558717
Ian’s wife Pearl predeceased him so on behalf of the RFA Association I extend our sincere condolences to their children Susan, Philip, Bridget and Jason, his 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Ian’s daughter Susan has sent me the following information:-
“Dad joined the Merchant Navy in late 1938, aged 15, as an apprentice and sailed from Cardiff on 28th January 1939, his 16th birthday. He sailed on SS Kingsbury, belonging to Capper, Alexander Shipping Company. This was a regular trade route taking coal from South Wales to the Argentine and Brazil and returning with grain and tinned meat to London. He left the Kingsbury in 1942 and joined the RFA as a Third Officer serving on RFA War Nawab, RFA War Brahmin and RFA War Sudra and then as Second Officer on RFA Airsprite, leaving the sea in 1946.”
