Pat Thompson writes:- I sailed with John in Tidepool in 1973 when I was Second Officer. John, for some reason got it into his head that I was a “wiz” when it came to motor cars. One evening, whilst on OFJ Gosport he asked me to drive his wife home and gave me the keys of his pride and joy, a white Rover 3500. This of course I did, returning to the ship and returning the keys to him on my return. The following morning I was called to his cabin and was informed that his wife had said I was a most considerate and careful driver and there was Bravo Zulus all round. The truth was that on the return journey I “Drove it like I stole it” …. boy did I have fun.
